Attractive cash rewards await national athletes who bring back medals from the Tokyo Olympics courtesy of Choppies Superstores.
The supermarket chain has pledged millions of Pula as incentive for the athletes.
Choppies marketing manager, Katlego Gaborone said at the announcement of the pledge recently that the supermarket would offer an athlete who brought home a gold medal P1m reward, P500 000 and P250 000 for those bringing home silver and bronze medals respectively.
Choppies would also show appreciation to athletes who compete and make it to the final stage by giving them P25 000.
Gaborone said Choppies was synonymous with the development of the communities in which it operated, and that the company believed in the development of sports, which was why it continued to support different codes from grass-root to international level.
“It is therefore fitting for us to once again, before you all here today, stand behind our national Olympics team by providing the support we believe will fuel their future,” she said Gaborone said it was proper to motivate athletes, as their training not only took time but also required a great deal of resources.
Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) president, Botsang Tshenyego said Choppies had demonstrated that they a stakeholder-focused organisation.
The BNOC and sport in general appreciated such gestures because as the civil society, they depended on the generosity and goodwill of businesses and other contributors.
He said they were looking forward to a long-term relationship with Choppies. “While we very much appreciate this gesture, we will be engaging Choppies further to try to enter into more long term relationships that can impact athletes in a more sustainable way,” he said.
Tshenyego said this year’s Olympic was historic for Botswana as for the first time the country had five female representatives at the competitions. ENDS
