Police in Maun are investigating deaths of a 29-year-old man and an eight year old girl, which occurred in different places over the Easter Holidays.
Senior Superintendent Peter Gochela said the girl was knocked down by a vehicle at Kookale settlement.
The incident, he said, happened around 6:10pm on Good Friday when a 46-year-old Range Rover driver was heading to Maun while the girl was crossing the road.
After the accident, he said, the driver rushed the victim to Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital where she was certified dead.
The deceased was a standard two pupil at one of the primary schools in Maun.
In another incident, a 29-year-old man died on the spot along Maun/Shorobe road on Saturday April 3 at around 4:30pm.
Senior Supt Gochela stated that the deceased, who was driving a Honda Fit, was accompanied by one passenger and they were heading to Maun from Matsaudi. He reportedly lost control of the vehicle and it veered off the road.
The passenger, he said, survived with minor injuries while investigations on the two matters were ongoing.
On other issues, Senior Supt Gochela said they had arrested a 24-year-old man of Sedie Ward to assist police in their investigations in connection with a rape incident which happened on April 3 at Sedie.
Senior Supt Gochela said the suspect allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl who was returning from a tuck shop.
He said it was reported that the victim met the suspect who attacked and dragged her to a nearby yard and raped her.
Still in Maun, the police arrested a 29-year-old man of Newtown Ward, who was found in possession of 21 sachets containing a green substance suspected to be dagga.
The police, he said, were alerted that the suspect was selling alcohol illegally and during the search, they found the said sachets.
Senior Supt Gochela also revealed that non-compliance to curfew restrictions and COVID-19 protocols still remained a challenge in his policing area.
He said they had charged 127 people for not obeying the curfew and COVID-19 regulations, since the beginning of the Easter Holidays.
Out of the total number, 25 were charged for unlawful gatherings, 58 for not wearing masks, 41 for not obeying curfew restrictions while two were charged for selling alcohol illegally.
He also raised a concern that they continued to experience influx of people in open areas commonly known as beaches. He however appealed to the public to stay home and adhere to the protocol regulations all the time. ENDS
