30 Mar 2021

A 50-year-old doctor appeared before Gumare magistrate court on  March 25, for allegedly raping three school girls.

Asunami Kasongo, who is based at Etsha 6 clinic, is alleged to have on March 22 raped three Etsha 6 junior secondary school girls aged 15.

Gumare police station commander, superintendent Dennis Zilawe, said in an interview that the girls had gone to seek medical attention at the clinic and it was alleged that upon arrival at the clinic, the girls were attended by the accused individually in the consultation room where he sexually assaulted them.

Supt. Zilawe said the girls then reported the matter to teachers upon their return to their school, Etsha 6 Junior Secondary School and the school management reported the matter to the police.

He said the accused had been granted bail and would appear for mention on May 24.

Meanwhile, Gumare police are also investigating an incident in which a 38-year-old man committed suicide at Gumare primary hospital where he was admitted.

Supt. Zilawe said the deceased, who was an employee of the Okavango sub-district council, was on Saturday taken to the hospital, where he was admitted.

He said when the nurses did routine checkups on Sunday afternoon, they found the deceased with shoe laces on the neck tied to the window.

The Gumare police station commander said it was the first incident of its kind in the area since beginning of the year.

He therefore advised people to seek professional help when they have problems instead of taking their own lives. ends
