Ikalalanga Jazz is one of the genres which are slowly making thrives into the local music industry.
Sheila Rodgers whose stage name is Mshilo, has joined the genre this year with her new album dubbed Ndo Enda, loosely translated to “I am leaving” in English. The Tutume born artiste, with the encouragement from her parents, began performing at the age of 19. She formed a duo called Makwati with Medupe Medupe in 2007 and released their first afro pop album dubbed Ndiwe.
The Ndiwe album was nominated for the best afro pop album at the 2009 Botswana Musicians Union awards. In 2010, Mshilo parted ways with Medupe and released her solo afro pop album in 2011 called Ulele, which was also used as a sound track for one of the Baboneng Film Production movie.
However, this year the talented Mshilo decided to change from afro pop to jazz and released Ndo Enda, something which she said it was growth musically.
She also said she was inspired by the Ikalanga jazz maestro, Ndingo Jowa whom she most of the times toured with as an opening act for Ndingo. Mshilo has a very broad audience for her jazz music while the track Ndo Enda seems to be Batswana’s favorite from the six track album.
The title track Ndo Enda already has a video which is playing on TV.
Other tracks in album include Nkwasha, Ulele, Chebukani and Nchidzi among others.
Meanwhile, Mshilo is currently a Marketing Executive at CBET, a print company that publishes The Midweek sun and Botswana Guardian newspapers. Music has always been a passion for the young lady, despite the busy schedule at her daily job. ENDS
