BFA supports Motsepe for CAF presidency

12 Jan 2021

Botswana Football Association (BFA) has put its weight behind South Africa’s Patrice Motsepe’s bid for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) presidency.

Motsepe is the owner of Mamelodi Sundowns and executive chairperson of African Rainbow Minerals.

Motsepe would face off with Jacques Anouma from Ivory Coast, Mauritania’s Ahmed Yahya as well as Augustin Senghor from Senegal at Rabat, Morocco in March for the elections.

On Tuesday, FIFA and CAF will submit the final list of candidates who have passed the integrity test, as everyone who wants to stand for an executive position have to go through the test.

In an interview, BFA president Maclean Letshwiti indicated that they believed Motsepe could turn CAF’s fortunes around hence the decision to support him.

He indicated that international football industry generated a lot of money and CAF’s share was very low, adding that football was a business.

“Motsepe is the right candidate for the job. He understands cooperate business,” he said.

As a successful business man, he said Motsepe would attract the right people to the game, because the cooperate world would believe in the kind of leader he is.

Further Letshwiti highlighted that Motsepe understood governance, prudence as well as financial administration.

“He has the quality to successfully grow and develop CAF and that is why BFA rally behind him,” he added.

Letshwiti explained that with Motsepe as leader of African football, CAF would make more money, which would then benefit associations since the amount they get from the federation would then increase. Ends
