Radio personalities take to the ring for GBV
13 Dec 2020
Radio personalities, Losika ‘Luzboy’ Seboni and Robin ‘Robbie Rob’ Chivazve took to the boxing ring in an attempt to root out the aggressive social ill, gender based violence.
Speaking in an interview after the much awaited ‘Feel Good Fight’, Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development Tumiso Rakgare said initiatives such as the Friday (Decemebr 11) night boxing match were much appreciated and ought to be promoted as the nation battled gender based violence.
He said the two boxers were displaying efforts to manage anger as they displayed that instead of punching your partner one had to punch the boxing bag.
Rakgare said it was pleasing to note that the fight against GBV was growing in leaps and bounds nationally. He urged partners to speak out when they were swamped with personal problems.
He said government was also playing its part as Parliament was expected to pass a bill on the Sex Offenders Registry very soon.
Botswana just like any other countries marked the United Nations’ 16 Days of Activism against GBV from November 25 to December 10 under the 2020 global theme: Orange the World: Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect.
The boxing match, which was expected to last four rounds of two minutes apart was finally called off towards the start of the third round as Luzboy’s corner threw in the towel.
However, Luzboy displayed great determination in the first round keeping his opponent at the end of his jab. He was given a standing eight count on the third minute when a carelessly thrown Robbie’s uppercut caught his jaw.
Robbie Rob displayed great technique on the second round and scored several points as his seemingly tired opponent could no longer keep his guard tight.
In a post-match interview Seboni said despite the loss he felt good for having completed his mission. He said the bout was all about behavioural change and urged the business community to jump on board and assist the initiative going forward.
For his part, Chivazve said they were pleased by the level of support they received from all quarters. He said he wanted to fight to the end but sadly his opponent retired earlier.
In the first two supporting bouts Tshephang Gomotho of 125 Boxing Club beat Nonofo Kitlanang of Selebi Phikwe. George Molwantwa of BMC beat 125’s Kagoetsile Raogatile 3-0. ENDS
