Zebras revive AFCON chance

17 Nov 2020

Botswana  national football team excellent performance against Zambia on November 16 revived the former’s chances of qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) billed for Cameroon.

Coach Adel Amrouche’s charges won 1-0 at Itani Chilume Sports Complex, which was also a sweet revenge for the 2-1 defeat in Lusaka last week.

The Zebras took a lead in the fifth minute through defender Mosha Gaolaolwe, who tucked home a cross from Kabelo Seakanyeng.

Though Chipolopolo recovered to control possession for most of the match, the Zebras defended their goal gallantly and created scoring opportunities on counter attacks.

Seakanyeng nearly doubled the lead from one of those counter attacks in the first half, but his effort hit the post.

Striker, Tumisang Orebonye, also had a good chance, but hesitated instead of shooting, while Gaolaolwe saw another effort sail over the bar.

The Zambian attackers were well checked by the Zebras rear-guard of Simisani Mathumo, Gaolaolwe, Tshepo Maikano and Thatayaone Ditlhokwe, which resulted in goalkeeper, Kabelo Dambe, having a less hectic match.

Midfielder, Mothusi Cooper, tenaciously hassled for the ball in midfield and drove forward on many occasions to lend support in attack.

The victory moved Botswana into position three in Group H with four points after four matches.

They are one point behind Zimbabwe who are in second place.

Algeria lead the group with 10 points and have already qualified while Zambia slumped to the bottom of the group with three points.

Amrouche said he wanted to see the Zebras qualify for AFCON.   He vowed that the team would fight for victory against Zimbabwe in the next qualifying match.

“My boys are ready to occupy another level in the group and I am confident that we will make it to the next level,” he said.

Zambia coach, Milutin Sredjovic, said his team failed to execute its assignment. Ends
