Serowe police have expressed concern about the increasing number of binge drinking and love affairs related murder cases in their area of jurisdiction.
Superintendent Poloko Oteng told BOPA on November 4 that they registered two such cases in Serowe and Sehunou settlement on October 30 and November 1 respectively.
He said they were investigating a case in which a young man aged 16 stabbed his 28-year-old brother to death at Marulamantsi ward in Serowe on October 30.
It was alleged that the brothers argued over house keys, whereupon the younger brother got angry and used a sharp object, suspected to be a knife, to stab the deceased. He said the brother was later certified dead at Sekgoma Memorial Hospital, while the suspect was currently in police custody to assist with investigations.
On November 2, Supt Oteng said the they received a suspected murder case report from Maome lands near Serowe, where a 26-year-old man was allegedly stabbed by his friend aged 34, with a sharp instrument.
He said the deceased was with a friend at a shebeen, where a misunderstanding ensued leading to the fatal fight, adding that the suspect was in police custody to assist with investigations.
Supt Oteng said in the majority of cases, women were killed by their partners, while men got killed at drinking spots by their drinking mates, adding that the perpetrators usually used knives.
Meanwhile, the police chief advised alcohol dealers in Serowe to operate within the stipulated times, saying prolonged hours of selling alcohol may also be contributing to the murder cases.
He also urged the community to refrain from any activity that may lead them to break the law, but to seek advice in case of misunderstandings. ENDS
