Talented boxer, Tefo Maitewa, is no more.

The 22-year-old, who was the 2017 and 2019 national flyweight and bantam weight champion, died at Scottish Livingstone Hospital on October 16.

He was admitted at Princess Marina Hospital after he was diagnosed with a brain tumour three months ago.

He was transferred from Princess Marina to Scottish Livingstone three days ago.

Botswana Boxing Association (BoBA) public relations officer,  Taolo Tlouetsile, confirmed Maitewa’s death in an interview on Saturday.

“I can confirm that Molepolole Boxing Club and national team boxer, Tefo Maitewa, passed on Friday afternoon.”

He said BoBA executive committee and Molepolole Boxing Club leadership met Maitewa’s family on Saturday afternoon, adding that funeral arrangements would be communicated in due course.

Maitewa’s exploits in the ring dated back to his junior secondary school days at Moruakgomo Junior Secondary School in Molepolole.

He was named best boxer of the year at the Botswana Boxing Association national championship finals in Molepolole last year.

The Molepolole-born pugilist represented the country at the 2016 African Union Sport Council (AUSC) Region 5 in Angola.

Maitewa also accompanied the national team to the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games for development purposes and he was currently part of the national team for the Olympic game qualifiers in Senegal. ends
