05 Oct 2020

Before COVID-19 hit the world, Thuso Mohurutshe, had opened a mobile kitchen, Food Hub and was operating from Gaborone’s Central Business Development (CBD).

When the economy slowed down worldwide due to the pandemic, Mr Mohurutshe relocated his business to a residential place in Gaborone West Block 5 neighbourhood.

“The lockdown affected us badly as we had to now start afresh and regroup our strategy,” Mr Mohurutshe stated, in an interview.

Since its opening, Food Hub which offers a quick and flavoursome lunch and dinner meal eatery had become a favourite for the youth because of its scrumptious menu.

With various menu items ranging from burgers, fries, chicken, beef, ribs and lately a kasi kota, their menu offers something enjoyable by everyone alongside their signature tasty sauce which sets them apart from the rest.

A Web Design graduate from Limkokwing Creative University of Technology, Mr Mohurutshe thrives on offering a variety of appealing fast foods to grow his establishment.

“We started off with chicken and beef, and later added burgers, wings, ribs and platters as well as kota meals on the menu,” he said, adding that he flourishes on offering something new and different every day. Food Hub is an eclectic, casual eatery that satisfies hunger and also a great catch-joint for buddies.

With a capacity of 50 people in an outdoor setup, the joint treats its patrons to interactive pool game whilst mingling and waiting for orders.

Recently, Food Hub launched another outlet in Thamaga, following a community demand for the establishment of a food outlet in Thamaga.

“People called and we responded to their calls,” said Mr Mohurutshe. Expanding the employment creation in Thamaga, he has a total of nine staff members including him.

Each outlet, he said, was being operated by four people, adding that the brand growth would enable opening of other outlets across the country.

He however pointed out that a branch would soon be opened in Francistown and Moshupa.

Every business has challenges and for Food Hub, the greatest for them is finding a venue for their business, he said adding that, “At the moment Food Hub operates in a residential place and that comes with its own challenges.”

Mr Mohurutshe said they were looking at finding a proper venue that would help his business reach its full potential. He said operating from a residential area forces them to close earlier and eventually losing on orders placed late after they closed for business.

He further said due to COVID-19 pandemic, they had resorted to using social media to stay relevant to their customers. ends
