Kasane police have confiscated liquor and tobacco; charged five people for illegal importation of liquor and tobacco as well as brewing and selling traditional beer, commonly known as modaefok or new banyana.

In an interview with BOPA, Superintendent James Maabong said the five people were three women and two men of Plateau and Kgaphamadi.

He said four of them were apprehended on September 2, following a tip off and raiding of their houses, while one was arrested on the banks of Chobe River, near Seboba.

He said the one arrested near Seboba was found transporting liquor from one of the neighbouring countries using a canoe, adding that each of the five people was charged P3000.

Supt Maabong said the police suspected that employees of one of the companies operating in Kasane, illegally imported liquor from Zambia and supplied those who were apprehended, for resale.

On other issues, he said during August, 20 cases of unlawful gathering were registered in his area of jurisdiction, 59 people were arrested for failure to wear masks, four for drinking at prohibited places as well as four cases of burglary.

He appealed to the public to adhere to all COVID-19 protocols.

Regarding the burglary cases, he noted that the police observed that the same modus operandi was used, as the culprits gained entry through kitchen windows, which were left open.

They also used a ball cutter to cut the burglar bars of the bigger windows. Supt Maabong said in all the cases electronics such as televisions and cellphones were stolen.

He pleaded with the home owners to ensure all windows were closed at night before retiring to bed and when going out. Supt Maabong said no arrests had been made for the burglary cases. BOPA
