Botswana’s tourism industry is one of those that have been severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Moreover, lack of tourism activities directly affected some communities.
Therefore, a group of private guides that have been working in the tourism industry for a long time, embarked on a project dubbed Trans Okavango Charity Cycle.
The project sees six riders cycling for charity from Seronga to Maun, with the aim to assist with donations, communities around the Okavango Delta.
The cyclists started in Seronga on August 30, and are expected to complete the journey in Maun on September 7.
This is done in partnership with Naletsana Charity Organisation that is focused on rural communities in and around the Okavango Delta and Ngamiland, with the aim to transform the lives of communities.
Speaking at one of the stops, being Mogotho village, where the team donated food hampers and school shoes for primary school pupils, one of the cyclists, Mr Seeletso Rakonche said many people who relied on tourism activities, had lost their jobs, hence needed some form of support.
He said for the Trans Okavango Charity Cycle project, they solicited some sponsorship from their clients abroad.
Kgosi Joseph Mosheti of Mogotho commended the guides for the initiative, noting that despite the tourism sector being hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, they saw it fit to support the affected communities through donations.
“We are grateful as people of Mogotho for this donation, especially during this trying times,” he said. Ends
