FDI generates over 400 jobs

Over 431 jobs were generated by 30 companies across different sectors through the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) during 2018/19 financial year.
Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Ms Peggy Serame told Parliament on Monday that during the financial year 2018/2019, cumulative FDI inflows was over P3.2 billion largely attributable to the more than expected performance from financial services sector.
She said the realised investment included manufacturing, services, hospitality, Agro-processing, mining, tourism and financial services.
She further stated that financial services made 11 out of 30 companies that contributed to FDI, with over P2 billion creating over 300 jobs out of the 431 jobs created by FDI.
She further stated that over 7 819 jobs were created through manufacturing, agriculture and financial services from a total investment in foreign, domestic and expansion across all ministry’s parastatals.
“ In our database we do not keep information with details outlined in the question. We require to engage and seek permission to include some details of this private enterprises”, she said.
She was answering a question from MP for Selebi Phikwe West, Mr Dithapelo Keorapetse, who asked Minister Serame to confirm whether Parliament or any gathering agent of government or President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi was ever informed by the ministry that P3.2 billion in FDI was secured and that 7 000 jobs were created as a result since President Masisi assumed office.
If so, Selebi Phikwe legislator asked the minister to state the names, addresses and other particulars of the company which set up in Botswana, the number of
Batswana employed by each of these companies and their positions, qualifications, professions or trading and the value, in pula terms, each of this companies brought as FDI. ENDS
