Ministries appoint joint task team

Ministries of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development and Basic Education have established a nine-member joint task team to recommend the most suitable way of running and managing school sport.
Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development, Tumiso Rakgare on Thursday revealed that earlier this year, MYSC and MoBE agreed that school sport needed to be reviewed before it resumed in 2021 saying sport was paused due to pending payment of teachers, who coached and trained students.
Rakgare said they wanted to make school sport more competitive and beneficial to students as individuals and the nation at large.
He said school sport was at the core of student development and could unlock students’ potential at a tender age.
“This collaboration will help the nation to spot talent at a younger age and will help Botswana to be competitive in the world of sport in general,” he said.
He said the team would help school sport with a lot of fresh ideas to enable it to produce best quality sportsmen and women.
He said government needed schools to improve the outlook of sport in Botswana and for the country to be represented during international tournaments such as dimaond leagues, World Cup, among others.
He said the team was expected to submit its report in three months, adding that since the team was youthful, it may even take less time.
Meanwhile, a media release from MYSC, says the task team will also recommend suitable models for implementation of school programmes, including competitions at local and international level.
“The proposed models should be efficient, cost effective and produce desired results,” the release says.
The team is chaired by Tapiwa Masunga and other members are Lincoln Goitsemang, Mogametsi Kowa, Tebo Segaise, Joshua Gaotlhobogwe, Selebatso Keabetswe, Bobby Gaseitsewe, Donald Dlamini and Dr Tshepang Tshube. ENDS
