Maun chief magistrate, Thebeetsile Molalu on Monday sentenced 29-year-old Kahoreua Kambe of Maun to 10 years in prison.
Kambe faced a single count of robbery for stealing a cellular phone worth about P1 500 belonging to Bokamoso Setswalo in December 2018 at Wapula Bar,
Before sentencing him, chief magistrate Molalu said he took into consideration that Kambe used violence against the complainant whom he threatened with a knife before running away with the phone he had borrowed to use.
Chief magistrate Molalu said it was indisputable that the accused took the complainant’s phone with fraudulent intentions and then used violence to retain it.
He said evidence gathered showed that the accused used aggression, and that the accused’s side of the story was false beyond doubt.
He also added that it was an afterthought as he claimed that the complainant and his companion had stolen his phone. He said the accused’s statement was rejected by court.
In his mitigation, Kambe pleaded with the court that he was an orphan and took care of his grandmother and a minor through temporary jobs.
He also begged the court to consider the value of the cellular phone. Ends
