BURS processes 90 per cent subsidy claims

The Botswana Unified Revenue Services (BURS) says it has processed up to 90 per cent of the wage subsidy claims during the months of April and May 2020.
Giving an update to the media on the wage subsidy scheme recently, the BURS Acting Commissioner General, Mr Segolo Lekau said there were some challenges on the remaining 10 per cent wage subsidy claims. Among the challenges, he indicated, was incorrect banking details submitted by the customers.
Mr Lekau pleaded with employers to provide the correct banking details so that BURS could finalise payment for those companies that were not paid.
He said another reason of non-payment was due to overdraft bank balances of companies and appealed to employers to sort out any outstanding bank overdrafts balances so that the wage subsidy claims could reach their employees.
Mr Lekau emphasised that the wage subsidy scheme was intended for employees and not companies.
He said in the course of the wage subsidy claim period, BURS received a high volume of telephone calls from employees complaining of non-payment by their employers.
“We want to make a plea to employers that in the event that they have received the wage subsidy claim payout, they must hasten to pay their employees,” he said.
Mr Lekau urged any individual or company to contact the wage subsidy call centre at 17649 for any wage subsidy claim related query or alternatively send an email to wagesubsidy@burs.org.bw. ENDS
