Seventeen people in Tlokweng have been charged for not wearing facemasks in public places.
Tlokweng Police Station Commander, Superintendent Unoziba Rari said all of the recorded cases were on May 24.
He said wearing of facemasks in public places was compulsory as part of the COVID-19 regulations.
Superintendent Rari said those arrested were charged P1 000 per individual and noted that the maximum charge was P5 000.
He stressed that none of those charged had a valid reason for not wearing a facemask or cloth covering the mouth or nose.
He said they all knew they were required to wear masks.
“Some said they had forgotten their masks while others said they had not had the opportunity to buy one,” he said.
He said the police would continue to enforce the law as expected.
Superintendent Rari also said all community members had a role to play in the fight against the pandemic.
He noted that the country was not yet free from the virus. ENDS
