Police are investigating the death of a nine-month old infant suspected to have swallowed a poisonous substance in Jackalas 2.
Tshesebe police station commander Supt Amos Kekgathetse said the infant is suspected to have ingested the poisonous substance when playing with other children in the compound on May 19.
He said the children were left under the care of their grandmother while the mother went to run errands.
The station commander highlighted that upon her return the mother realised a smell coming from the infant and when she assessed the child she observed that the child was foaming.
The infant was then taken to the clinic and was certified dead upon arrival.
Supt Kekgathetse stated that the corpse was taken to Nyangabwe hospital in Francistown for postmortem to establish the cause of death.
He further said that the police gathered a few bottles of substances at the compound to assist in their investigations.
He called on parents to be vigilant when they have children around the house and keep all poisonous and non-edible substances far from children’s reach. Ends
