20 May 2020

Maun police have recorded two incidents of suicide that took place at different places.

Station commander, Superintendent Chemano Orateng, confirmed the incidents in an interview, saying they were investigating two deaths of an 11-year-old girl and a 29-year-old man who were both found hanging from roof rafters.

The incident involving the 11-year-old, he said, took place at Boro Ward and was reported by the neighbours on May 18.

He explained that the deceased was left home in the company of other children while her grandmother went for shopping.

Supt. Orateng reported that one of the children went to the house and was shocked to see the deceased hanging and rushed to neighbours to alert them about the incident.

The second incident, he said took place at Senonnori Ward in Maun on Sunday.

He stated hat family members said they parted with the deceased the previous night and were worried the following day when he could not wake up until late.

The family, he said decided to break into his house since they did not know his whereabouts and were shocked to found him hanging from the rafters.

Supt. Orateng pointed out that the deceased was rushed to Letsholathebe Memorial hospital where he was certified dead.

He thus appealed to the public to engage family members or social workers when they had problems, saying committing suicide was not a solution.

Meanwhile, police have recorded four incidents of suicide since the beginning of the year. Ends
