Police nab trio for unlawful possession of dagga

05 May 2020

Botswana Police in Mogoditshane have arrested three men for possession of a substance suspected to be dagga.

In an interview, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Dipheko Motube said the three men aged between 21 and 26 were arrested on May 05 at Botshabelo ward in Kopong.

He said the three suspects were found in possession of 300 grams of a substance believed to be dagga.

Mr Motube said the police conducted raids in Kopong on Saturday, which did not yield anything and later, they managed to nab the three in the same locality where the search was conducted over the weekend.

He said the police intelligence operations together with the public cooperation following an outcry on the high use of dagga and related substances in Kopong brought positive results.

Mr Motube said when found guilty, the three would be faced with a fine of P500 000 or 10 years imprisonment or both.

He said the three would appear before the Magistrate Court soon while the substance had been taken to the laboratory for testing.

The Assistant Commissioner observed that since the ban of alcohol sale during the lockdown, police had realised that some people resorted to the use of dagga as they have registered 121 incidences in April compared to 88 such incidences in March.

Mr Motube said they would continue to conduct raids in all areas which were hot-spots in the Greater Gaborone.

He appealed to Batswana to inform the police on all illegal activities as by doing so they would be protecting their children.

Mr Motube also cautioned young people who had been peddling drugs for drug dealers to refrain from doing that as they could compromise their future. ENDS
