Optimal land utilisation crucial to food production

28 Apr 2020

Batswana have been urged to utilise land prudently in order for them to produce enough food.

Speaking at a COVID-19 preparedness media briefing on April 28, an agronomist at Seed Co Group, Mr Dialwa Kenatshele said government spent millions of pula to import food from neighbouring countries despite the fact that Botswana had a ‘precious gift in the form of land’.

Mr Kenatshele said Batswana should adopt a system of utilising every piece of land to produce food as that would assist the government to save money for other pressing demands.
He said the outbreak of coronavirus should be a lesson to every Motswana that when situations become tough every country focused on producing food for its people before it could think of other countries, adding that ‘this is the right time to learn to produce for ourselves’.

Mr Kenatshele said the company was working round the clock to conduct a thorough research on seeds that could do well in the climate of Botswana so as to ensure provision of such seeds to facilitate the country’s efforts to be self-reliant on food.

The managing director, Mr Samson Ruwisi said his company would soon announce its contribution towards the COVID-19 Relief Fund, saying the announcement was delayed by government protocols.
He stated that the donation process was ongoing between the company and the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development and would soon be publicised through various media. Ends
