Mahalapye police have arrested 71 people for various crimes, which include non-compliance to COVID-19 regulations.
In an interview, station commander, Superintendent Boitshepo Mudongo said the 71 people were arrested between April 20 and April 24, and majority of them were arrested for moving around without permits and were charged P200 each.
In another incident, Supt. Mudongo said four men, from White City Ward, aged 21 and 22 were arrested for house breaking and stealing items including televisions, blankets and foodstuffs.
She observed that the owners of the houses that were broken into were absent, given that most people had moved to various places prior to the lockdown.
“Through the assistance of these men, we have managed to recover the items and they have showed us which items they picked from which household,” she said, adding the culprits had also stolen items worth P54 000 at Mothers Union Orphanage Day Care Centre.
Again, Supt. Mudongo said police have arrested six men for operating taxis without COVID-19 permits.
“The six taxi men had removed the designated public transport registration numbers and were transporting people illegally,” she said.
Meanwhile, Supt. Mudongo appealed to Mahalapye residents to introduce neighbourhood watch initiative, so that neighbours could keep an eye on each other’s property during their absence.
She also encouraged those who can afford to install security alarms to do so as a precautionary measure to curb house breaking. Ends
