Ministry of Defence, Justice and Security has noted with concern the recent incidents in which citizens and residents have fallen victims to unprecedented violent crimes such as armed robberies and aggressive housebreaking.
A press release from the ministry said statistics indicated that the most affected areas were Gaborone, Francistown, Serowe, Molepolole and surrounding areas. It however stated that almost 85 per cent of suspects believed to be involved in these incidents had been arrested.
The release further stated that the Botswana Police Service had also increased targeted patrols in areas with the potential to attract criminal activity. It also said, though the statistics indicated that crime involving burglary, store breaking, theft and house breaking had declined by 26 per cent as compared to the same period last year, the level of violence in committing these crimes was worriesome.
The ministry advised all to be vigilant and attentive while any suspicious or criminal activity must be reported immediately. The general public was also assured that the ministry was taking all the necessary steps to ensure that the safety and security of its residents and citizenry was safeguarded.
The ministry, stated the release, wished to convey heartfelt condolences to those that had lost their loved ones in these tragic incidents. ENDS
