Police arrest 19 for poaching

Police in Letlhakane have arrested 19 people suspected to have been poaching wild animals in Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR).

According to Senior Superintendent Sarah Gabathusi, a team of investigators found four suspects at the scene in CKGR.

She said the quartet gave a tip that led to arrest of 15 more people who were also indicated in a scam of syndicates targeting wild animals.

She stated that investigators also found bundles of biltongs suspected to be of wild animal animals.

Senior Superintendent Gabathusi explained that horses, donkeys, dogs and hunting weapons were also found at the crime scene.

The suspects were arrested in and within the outskirts of CKGR and were suspected to be the residents of Kedia and neighbouring ranches.

She also said the suspects would be charged for hunting in a game reserve contrary to section 12:3 of Wildlife Conservation and National Parks Act as well as failure to comply to COVID-19 regulations as stipulated in statutory instrument No 61 of 2020. ENDS
