16 Apr 2020

Eight prisoners who escaped from Moshupa Boys Prison on April 13 have been arrested after an extensive manhunt.

Moshupa Station Commander, Superintendent David Ramoseki said two escapees were arrested the same day in the vicinity of the prison premises.

He said law enforcement officers comprising of police officers, prison warders, Botswana Defence Force soldiers and Botswana Police Service air wing officers searched for the remaining escapees, amongst them five Batswana and a Zimbabwean national.

He said four escapees surrendered themselves to Moshupa police on April 14, while the seventh one also handed himself to Sejelo police.

He said they were then arraigned before Moshupa Customary Court and four of them pleaded guilty for escaping from lawful custody, while the other escapee did not plead guilty.

He said the one who did not plead guilty, would appear before the same court on April 17 for setting of trial dates.

He said the eighth escapee, who was arrested at Gasegwagwa on April 15, was also arraigned before Moshupa Customary Court.

He said their ages ranged from 19 to 22, adding that five were serving their sentences while one was awaiting trial.

Supt Ramoseki said the six escapees were remanded at Lobatse State Prison because they had shown intentions of escaping from lawful custody.

Supt Ramoseki said one of the two escapees, who sustained injuries during the breakout, was at Gaborone Central Prison while the other was admitted at Princess Marina Hospital for medical attention. Ends
