Guard caught throwing tobacco into prison premises

16 Apr 2020

Ghanzi police are investigating a case in which a Wayguard Security male guard was allegedly smuggling tobacco into Ghanzi Prison premises.

Ganzi Police Station commander, Superintendent Modiro Lekone told BOPA in an interview that the guard was recently seen by some people throwing tobacco into the premises over the fence.

The suspects claims that he was sent to source the tobacco and bring it, by an inmate through a cell phone conversation.

Superintendent Lekone said the guard had already been charged with common nuisance, but he could face another charge after establishing where he got the tobacco, citing that currently the sale of tobacco is prohibited in the country.

Superintendent Lekone further told BOPA that seven people were charged and fined P200 each over Easter holidays for loitering the streets without permits, adding that a 37-year-old Zimbabwean man was arrested for being in the country without proper documentation. Superintendent Modiro Lekone however said the man was screened for coronavirus and he tested negative.
