Car hits octogenarian

18 Mar 2020

An 82-year-old woman died after she was hit by a car on Monday, March16, along Nelson Mandela Road.

Broadhurst Police Station Commander, Superintendent Obusitse Lokae confirmed the accident in an interview, saying investigations were ongoing.

He said the deceased had suffered head injuries and was certified dead on arrival at Extension II clinic.

Supt. Lokae said the old woman, who hailed from Mochudi, was crossing the road from Extension 16 to Extension 19 when the accident happened.

He said instead of using the pedestrian bridge, the old woman was walking under it.

“We suspect that the driver was not expecting to hit a person as people do not usually pass there but the woman being an elderly must have been tried to walk up the pedestrian bridge and decided against it,” he said.

He said the deceased’s granddaughter was contacted while a post mortem was done Wednesday, March 18 and were awaiting results.

“The 30 year-old man, who hit the deceased was brought in on that same day but was later on released as he was not found to be a flight risk,” he said.

He explained that remanding an accused person in custody was not a punishment, but at times would be done so that the accused would help with investigations or for their own protection from angry community members.

Meanwhile, Supt. Lokae encouraged pedestrians to use bridges to avoid accidents. Ends
