Bees cause havoc during FA cup tie

16 Mar 2020

Chaos erupted during an Orange FA Cup last 16 encounter between Calendar Stars and Jwaneng Fighters in Francistown on March 15.

Just as the game was to end, bees appeared from nowhere and started attacking both players and spectators causing the game to be stopped for a while.

A young boy who was seriously stung by the bees was attended by paramedics at the scene and discharged.

A middle-aged man who was also attacked was taken to Jubilee Clinic and given medication before being discharged while another  one suffered an arm dislocation during the fracas. He was rushed to Nyangabwe Referral Hospital and later discharged.

The two teams game ended in a 2-1 victory for Calendar Stars.

Calendars Stars showed their determination to win the match by starting the game with a high pace and attacking Jwaneng Fighters from the onset.

Within the first minute of the game, Stephan Mothwalo of Calendar Stars tried his luck, but his effort slammed the post. In the fourth minute, Yashe Dambe also tried his luck with a powerful shot but found Jwaneng Fighters goalkeeper, Stephen Kudubane, up to the task.

Calendar Stars kept on probing their rivals from time to time looking for an opening goal, and it was in the 11th minute when Dambe opened the score sheet after dribbling through Jwaneng Fighters defenders.

Their joy was, however, short lived as Tshiamo Moreetsi of Jwaneng Fighters equalised in the 12th minute.

Lapologang Motlogi of Jwaneng Fighters missed an opportunity to put his team on the lead just outside the box.

Vincent Marumo of Calendar Stars proved to be a thorn on his rivals as he orchestrated attack after attack.

In the 22nd minute, Marumo attempted a shot on goal just outside the box and Jwaneng Fighters defenders worked  overtime to contain him.

Ultimately, Marumo scored the goal he had been searching for through a penalty to give his team the lead again.

Five minutes after scoring the second goal, he brushed the post with a powerful drive.

The first half ended with Calendar Stars in the driving seat and dominating possession. However, they failed to utilise the chances they created as their response in the box was too slow.

Jwaneng Fighters were also showing their fightingt spirit, but it was not enough to intimidate their opponents.

As the second half commenced, Jwaneng Fighters applied more pressure against Calendar Stars  looking for an equalising goal.

The south division team improved their ball possession as they kept on visiting the goal posts of Nsala Mosinyi, but Calendar Stars defence was up to the task as they did not give them a chance to shoot for goal.

Jwaneng Fighters changed formation to try to launch more attacks against their rivals, but their effort did not yield any positive results.

The game ended with Calendars Stars proceeding to the quarter-finals and Charles Mabuse was voted man of the match.

Just after the game ended, the quarter-finals draw was conducted and Calendars Stars was pitted against Masitaoka.

Jwaneng Galaxy will face Notwane, Police XI was drawn against Gaborone United while Township Rollers will face Mahalapye Railway Highlanders.

The quarter-final games will be played on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of April. Ends
