In memory of the late Debswana managing director, Albert Milton, Majwe Mining Joint Venture director, Rod Dixon and Albertinah Milton will host the Majwe-AM570 Cycling Challenge in April.

Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Eric Molale said Milton had a very successful career in the mining industry, particularly diamond mining, and that his memories and spirit would continue to leave long in the form of Majwe-AM570 Cycling Challenge.

Molale said he was happy that the good that Milton did had not been interred with his bones as his wife was living the spirit of her late husband. He added that he hoped the event would grow until it competed with other cycling tourism events such as the Cape Argus.

“It is the willingness of the mind and spirit that has driven Majwe to the good that Milton had done, and we must use his good to give back to the community by launching this cycling challenge so that he lives through his wife,” said the minister.

He said his ministry appreciated the support that they got from corporates and were aware of their efforts in helping the less privileged.

“Events such as the AM570 cycling challenge will help government to accomplish helping the disadvantaged as government alone cannot do it all,” said Molale.

Launching the race in Gaborone on Tuesday, Majwe mining communications and community relations officer, Gaone Mogae said the race honours the late Debswana managing director, who, together with Dixon, took part in national, international and charity cycling activities.

She said the 570 km race would commence from Gaborone to Mahalapye and back before ending in Jwaneng in May. Milton and Dixon would be accompanied by other seasoned cyclists and sponsors.

Mogae said Majwe-AM570 was a charitable event and that proceeds would go towards the upliftment and development of less privileged pupils in the Jwaneng area.

She said her team worked closely with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and that of Basic Education to identify the needs of learners, adding that it emerged that most pupils were in dire need of basic amenities.

Mogae noted that they were focusing on learners because President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi emphasised in his inaugural speech that his drive was to move the country to a knowledge-based economy.

She said as Majwe-AM570 team they have aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 that spoke of  quality and equitable education for all.

Mogae added that it was their prerogative to contribute to the attainment of goals and aspirations hence their choice of giving back to underprivileged learners.

“We plan to do this through furnishing secondary schools and extending a helping hand to orphans, the needy and RADP pupils on their socio-economic needs,” she said. ENDS
