On the doorstep of the Okavango Delta, along the banks of the Thamalakane River, sits Maun Lodge, which has quickly become first choice for a diverse market.
The double storey facility, is only 2.5km from the town centre and 4km from the airport. It offers different styles of accommodation for both local and international tourists and people visiting Maun on business.
The lodge which has become a gateway to the Okavango Delta, over the weekend celebrated its 20th anniversary, in a glamorous event that was attended by local leadership, government and corporate institutions among others.
During the celebrations, management recognised its staff’s efforts, especially those who have walked the long journey with the lodge since it opened its doors in 1999.
The employees, who have been with the facility for 10, 15 and 20 years, were awarded certificates of appreciation and cash ranging from P1 500, to P5 000.
Speaking during the event, one of the directors, Mr John Wellio noted that the facility had grown in leaps and bounds through the support from government departments, corporate institutions, community, tourists, individuals and other stakeholders.
Maun Lodge, he said was one of the most visited facilities in Maun because of its excellent customer service, adding that it continued to meet the needs of all tourists and residents alike.
“Our philosophy is value for your money, hence we continue striving to offer excellent service to meet the best standards,” he added.
Mr Wellio revealed that the facility, which was majority citizen owned, was run by four shareholders who are all directors.
The lodge opened its doors in 1999 with only 39 staff, 30 beds and a conference room.
Mr Wellio said at the time, it was considered the big hotel in Maun because the village was still growing.
Overtime, he said they managed to buy their neighbours’ properties to expand the facility to 140 rooms, three restaurants and three big conferences, which could seat up to 500 people.
After expansion, he said they increased the staff with 141 being locals and only two expatriates.
Mr Wellio also noted that they managed to acquire Mokoro Lodge, which comprised of 36 rooms and 19 staff members, all locals.
Mokoro Lodge is located 6km from the town centre along the Maun/Francistown road.
Just like other corporate institutions, Maun Lodge gives back to the community through its corporate social responsibility initiative, Mr Wellio stated.
He noted that they had a budget for the initiative and most of the time they donated to charitable organisations and deserving individuals.
Apart from that, he said they offer spaces for tertiary students to get hands on experience.
Another director, Mr John Riley thanked all key partners and stakeholders for their support and ensuring a smooth working relationship.
The lodge, he said was where it was because of their great support and urged them to keep up the good spirit of growing the tourism and hospitality industry. ENDS
