Member of Parliament for Mahalapye East, Mr Yandani Boko, has appealed to Xhosa I residents to join forces and develop their ward.
Addressing a kgotla meeting at Xhosa I ward yesterday, Mr Boko said instead of holding grudges over pains encountered during political campaigns and election period, people should reunite in development.
MP Boko said time was now to reconcile and focus on contributing to developing and addressing Xhosa I social ills.
The Mahalapye East legislator encouraged parents to play an active role in their children’s education by monitoring their performance and visiting schools to assist teachers where possible.
He also decried rampant crime in Xhosa I and called upon parents to join efforts with the police in fighting crime.
He cautioned parents against covering wrong doings by their children, adding that criminal activities should be reported to the police.
The MP lamented the high youth unemployment, saying it contributed to high crime rate.
MP Boko extended a helping hand to the youth who had ideas of how they could develop themselves and to those who were already hands on.
He advised siblings to consult lawyers after deaths of their parents to help reduce conflicts in families.
Parents were also advised to write wills to avoid misunderstandings.
For his part, Parents and Teachers Associations (PTA) national chairperson, Mr Edward Moganana urged parents to actively participate in the upbringing of their children for them to become well rounded.
Mr Moganana expressed disappointment over the the Junior Certificate results, saying Mahalapye schools had a record of 500 grade U pupils.
He appealed to parents to consider vocational education, since it was clear that white collar jobs were not a line that all children could excel in.
Furthermore, he raised a concern that parents owed P290 000 for school fees and P130 000 for development fund.
Mahalapye Central Police station commander, Superintendent Boitshepo Modongo said Mahalapye Central Police station had been opened for four months, but had so far registered more than 3 000 criminal cases.
