Moshupa-Manyana MP, Mr Karabo Gare has underscored need for transformation in dominant economic activities.
Speaking during a kgotla meeting in Ralekgetho recently, he said economic transformation would reduce the import bill, thus stimulating economic growth as well as creating employment.
Mr Gare, also Assistant Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, said the country should focus on nourishing the economy, noting such a move would reduce budgetary constraints.
He said the vision and a strategy for this change rested on knowledge, information and high skill levels.
He said a knowledge-based economy was one where ideas and technologies were ingredients; intellectual property was the merchandise and people expected smarter products with more convenience.
“It is that economy which is directly based on the production, distribution and use of knowledge and information”, he said.
Mr Gare urged Batswana to take advantage of the demand gap in horticulture to better their lives, adding that horticulture had potential to rake in money because the country did not have enough supply.
He said importing horticultural products was equivalent to exporting jobs y.
He shared that Botswana beef was in high demand world-wide since it had good taste, thus he encouraged Batswana to take advantage of beef cattle using up-to-the-minute knowledge to better their lives.
He said it was critical to align skills to the needs of the economy and take advantage of opportunities created by the market gap to grow the economy. ENDS
