Jwaneng mayor registers development trust
01 Sep 2013
Jwaneng's Mayor Development Trust, intended to restore dignity among the less privileged members of the community, among other things, has been registered.
The mayor, Mr Amos Jahana told a full council meeting recently that the trust was registered on August 20. “The purpose of this development trust is amongst other equally important terms, to undertake and promote social transformation, to promote the spirit of goodwill, charity and civic pride and to assist disadvantaged members of the community,” he explained.
Thus, he called on fellow councillors and the business community to support the noble gesture so that it could effectively and successfully deliver on its mandate. The trust was founded last year as a brainchild of the mayor in collaboration with the Majwe Mining Joint Venture.
On other issues, Mr Jahana informed the council that a delegation from the City of Peoria in the United States was expected to visit Jwaneng next month (October). The purpose of the visit, which was postponed earlier this year, he said, was to explore a possible twinning programme between the two areas.
The meeting between the two would be expected to mark the beginning of a potential partnership on sharing ideas of developing the diamond mining town, as well as laying a foundation for other future partnerships.
It would also develop and enhance economic diversification strategies that could help the two places in areas such as tourism. Mr Jahana therefore urged the town leadership to work towards making the visit a success. “Let us all be prepared for this occasion by availing ourselves to assist and share ideas on how we can successfully host the Peoria delegation,” he said.
