Number of malaria cases drops in Ngamiland

25 Nov 2019

There has been a decline in malaria cases in Ngamiland, with only eight cases recorded in 2019 compared to 60 in 2018.

Speaking during Malaria Elimination and Prevention campaign in Matsaudi recently, head of prevention services, Dr Sandra Maripe attributed the decline to low rainfall.

Dr Maripe, however, noted that despite the massive decrease in cases and malaria information provision, there were still fears since some villagers were reluctant to partake in the indoor residual spraying as well as the use of mosquito nets that the Ministry of Health and Wellness provided.

She said effectiveness of the indoor residual spray, depended wholly on spraying acceptance and adherence to instructions given by mobilisers and spray operators.

She said one of the major challenges encountered during the exercise was that people refused to open up their houses for spraying, despite the education that they receive on a daily basis.

Nonetheless, Matsaudi was ranked 100 per cent on indoor residual spraying adherence, with Somelo village ranking the most improved, while Sehithwa was the lowest at 72 per cent.

Dr Maripe revealed that starting from December 1, 2019 to January 31, 2020, the indoor residual spraying and distribution of mosquito nets would kick start.

For his part, Village Extension Team Chairperson, Mr Salvation Lopang, said malaria elimination by 2020 was possible, if the community cooperates with the Ministry of Health and Wellness.

Stressing that malaria was preventable, he encouraged the community to use mosquito repellents, avoid leaving stagnant water as well wearing long sleeved clothing.

The main aim of the campaign was to educate the community about malaria prevention and treatment as well as to enhance competition amongst communities through awards in order to reach the set indoor residual spraying target of 85 per cent. ENDS
