BURS confiscate Butales car cash

14 Nov 2019

The Botswana Unified Revenue Services (BURS) has confiscated a Toyota Wish vehicle belonging to Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF) president, Mr Biggie Butale.

The vehicle was confiscated today (November 14) afternoon at Ramotswa border post after the BURS officials found an undeclared cash in the vehicle.

In an interview, Mr Butale said BURS confiscated the car and about R20 000 belonging to his wife and was found in the wife’s handbag.

Mr Butale said he was returning from attending a workshop in Johannesburg, South Africa offered by the National Democratic Institute and his wife had also go to the same town for some shopping.

The BPF leader conceded that it was true that the money was not declared and said he had expected to be thoroughly searched at the border post.

He alleged that he saw a strange vehicle following them around, Swartruggens South Africa and he suspected it to be of the intelligence services.

“I asked my wife what she had in the car because they were tailing us and she said I was just being paranoid,” he said.

He said confiscation of his car was politically motivated, adding that there was nothing discovered during the search which included sniffer dogs.

Efforts to speak to BURS officials were not fruitful. Ends
