29 Oct 2019

Welheminah Maswabi 's lawyer, Mr Unoda Mack, says there is nothing in the documents submitted before Gaborone High Court that suggests that his client committed any offence.

He indicated that there was nothing to prove that indeed the three bank accounts which were provided as evidence before court had Maswabi as one of the signatories. "These are allegations not evidence ", he added.

Mr Mack further said it was only an allegation that Maswabi was in a relationship with Isaac Kgosi because people who were interviewed said Maswabi frequently visited Kgosi's office and some said they were not sure. Therefore, he said his client should be granted bail because there was no evidence linking her to the allegations.

On one hand, the prosecution team said electronic signatures were used to give some of the documents authenticity. Prosecution team also said if granted bail, Maswabi could interfere with the investigations. They added that the process of acquiring mutual legal assistance was still on, adding that she was a flight risk because she used to travel to many countries.

The prosecution also said Maswabi carried a diplomatic passport, junior as she was in a her job, and that she was in a relationship with Kgosi " they were lovers", they added.

They said Maswabi had bank accounts in Germany, Hong Kong and other countries. The prosecution team also said offences committed were serious therefore accused person should be remanded in custody.

Maswabi, a Directorate of Intelligence and Security Services (DIS) employee, is charged with three counts of financing acts of terrorism, possession of unexplained property and false declaration for passport. ENDS
