OP departments build house for the needy people

08 Oct 2019

Batswana continue to be compassionate towards the less privileged citizens by extending assistance in respective forms of need.

Recently, Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration departments such as office of the District Commissioner, Information  and Broadcasting Services in the North West region, constructed a two-roomed house for one needy person in Xaixai.

The house was part of the annual projects that the departments had committed to undertake in a bid to help rural communities.

Speaking at the handover ceremony on Monday, Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration, Mr Nonofo Molefhi commended such departments for the noble gesture.

He said Batswana were known for their spirit of compassion, hence encouraged the nation to continue helping each other to ensure no one was left behind.

The minister however urged beneficiaries to take good care of the gift and also desist from selling donated property.

On another issue, Mr Molefhi encouraged Xaixai youth to explore business opportunities in the area, citing an example of goat farming.

He said goat farming was viable in the Xaixai because the area had better grazing land.

“Goat meat is scarce and in demand in Botswana. You should take advantage of such businesses,” said Mr Molefhi.

He also encouraged residents to showcase and promote their traditional games such as their unique morabaraba, adding that such games could compete at the President’s Day Competitions.

On the other hand, Mr Molefhi told residents to be prepared for the October 23 general elections by making sure that Omang cards were valid and also readiness of registration cards.

Meanwhile, Northwest District Performance Improvement Coordinator, Mr Joe Garebagae said the team identified, through office of the social worker, one Ms Nxuka Qhame as a needy person in 2018.

The old woman lived in a small shack with her six children and partner, a situation which compelled OP departments to extend a helping hand hence the decision to construct a two roomed house, toilet as well as fencing the yard.

Kgosi John Marenga of Xaixai also applauded the departments for such a move, adding that not only the beneficiaries should appreciate the house, rather the community at large because the project had restored the dignity of one of them.

The beneficiary, Ms Nxuka Qhame was excited about the gift, saying that its handing over was timely as the rainy season was approaching.

She said they had lived under harsh conditions especially during winter and the rainy season because of the poor structure they used as shelter.ENDS
