First Lady inspires learners

07 Oct 2019

The First Lady Ms Neo Masisi has encouraged learners to aim for the skies in whatever they do.

Speaking during a workshop themed; I am a star, organised for learners aged 8 to 18 years from primary school and secondary schools in Molepolole she explained that the programme, her own initiative, was aimed at molding the girlchild because they were the most vulnerable in the society.

Interestingly, among the learners who had gathered at Kgari Sechele Senior Secondary School on October 4, was 10-year-old girl Queen Jacob from Suping Primary School boldly told Ms Masisi that she aspired to become a First Lady in the not so distant future.

The statement caught the attention of the First Lady who asked the learners to demonstrate to the gathering how a First Lady sits and walks.

Queen took the challenge without hesitation much to the amusement of the crowd.

She strolled and walked with her chest out and comfortably sat on the chair with her shoulders up attracting cheers from the crowd.

Quizzed why she wanted to be a first lady, she said the role of First Lady was held in high regard.

She further said that the First Lady accompanied the President on international trips and got opportunities to meet very important people.

Queen now wants to meet the First Lady and her daughter Atsile.

Also, 13-year-old boy, Pheto Tshugane from Lephaleng Primary school said he learnt a lot from the workshop.

He said he learnt about goal setting as well as saying no to negative peer pressure. He appreciated having met the First Lady in person.

The audacious character set the tone of the meeting leaving the First Lady astonished.

In response Ms Masisi said the learners had truly demonstrated that young people across the country have what it takes to take the country to another level.

All that is needed was to tap into such diverse talents and make them come out, as ‘the ground was fertile’.

She explained that the I am a star concept was thought about last year when she assumed the role of First Lady.

She said her interest lied in girls and women because they lived under vulnerable circumstances.

Her intention is to impart life skills and prepare them with something that is sustainable such as giving them soft skills.

Concepts of self-awareness and goal setting, Ms Masisi explained, were some of the techniques she used in the workshops to bring about positive change.

She said the initiative was started in Kasane with 50 children in March.

The number of learners who had attended the October 4 event was  about 110.
