Kgatleng rape cases worry police

04 Oct 2019

The large number of rape cases recorded over the independence holidays in the No. 12 policing district are said to be a cause for concern

Speaking in an interview, the district’s officer commanding, Senior Superintendent Lesole Mosimane said they recorded seven rape cases from September 27 to October 2.

He said all the seven cases were recorded in Mochudi.

“For the same period last year, there were no rape cases recorded,” he said, adding that investigations showed that most rape offences occurred during or after entertainment events.

Senior Superintendent Mosimane said he planned to engage the tribal leadership and the community to come up with ways of tackling this worrying trend.

“Seven rape cases are a lot and we need to do everything in our power to eliminate them,” he said, further indicating that this was a sign that domestic violence was prevalent in the Kgatleng District and thus should be attended to urgently.

He noted that they also recorded 25 assault cases, compared to 38 last year for the same period and even though it marked a decline, a lot still needed to be done.

Senior Superintendent Mosimane also highlighted that they registered 15 road accidents this year compared to 29 last year.

He said from the 15 accidents, two were serious and in two other three people died.

“For the same period last year, we had four serious accidents and zero fatal accidents,” he said.

He said one fatal accident occurred at Artesia, where a mini bus had a tyre burst, resulting in two people dying, while the other one occurred at Mmathubudukwane, where a motorist hit an elderly man riding a bicycle and he died on the spot.

“The deceased was aged 73,” he said. He further said they registered 16 cases of drunken driving as compared to four for the same period last year.

“We randomly tested 17 drivers for alcohol and only 11 were found to be positive. For the same period last year, we tested 12 drivers and got four that were positive for alcohol,” he said.

Senior Superintendent Mosimane said drunken driving cases needed to be nipped in the bud as they were increasing and vowed to ensure motorists towed the line. Touching on other cases, Senior Superintendent Mosimane said they only recorded one case of house break-in compared to zero last year.

“For common nuisance, we recorded 12 for this period versus 27 for the same period last year, theft common stands at 20 compared to 10, illegal immigrants were 24 and 10 for last year, drinking alcohol in prohibited areas was 30 compared to 73 last year, while stock theft we had one case where three cows were stolen, compared to one case last year,” he said.

Senior Superintendent Mosimane said there were no cases of unlawful possession of marijuana as was the case last year. ENDS
