Some renowned South Africa and Batswana motorcyclists across the country have joined hands to promote tourism sector during the National off-road Champions billed for Chanoga on September 29.
The annual event in its seventh year, is organised by the Okavango Motor Club (OMC) purposefully to take the motor sport to the people and also promote the tourism sector.
Speaking during a press conference at Maun on Wednesday, OMC chairperson, Tammi McAllister explained that preparations were on track noting that they chose Chanoga because of its beauty.
“It’s along the Boteti River, with eye catching landscape and numerous wildlife species are found in the area,” she said.
She said people from Chanoga and surrounding villages would celebrate Independence in style with a bit of noise and fun adding that this year’s affair was historic having roping roped in four female riders and junior riders aged between 4-15 years.
The chairperson revealed that there would be two loops of approximately 50km long, which would have to be completed four times to make up for a total distance of 200km.
“The area is fantastic with thick sand; dry river beds, rocks and the heat will challenge the riders and push them to ride their most challenging race to date. The route will certainly not disappoint this year,” she added.
McAllister also noted that some top international riders from South Africa had shown interest to participate in the race and that about 50 riders were expected to be part of the event.
OMC member, Mike Wilkenson, who is leading the championship is expected to join other riders and his fellow members are optimistic about him snatching the 2019 championship title.
Last year, the event attracted 32 riders including the sensational Ross Branch, who emerged the 2018 champion.
McAllister appealed to the community to come in large numbers to support the riders noting that the race would also be promoting junior riders.
The main spectator points she said would be Samedupi Bridge and Chanoga along the main road.
She called on spectators to embrace the event and appreciate the speed and skill of the riders.
The chairperson acknowledged the great support from Chanoga community and the village leader, Kgosi Oateng Setlhodi for hosting them last year and this year.
OMC favouritr, Wilkenson said Chanoga was the best place for the race considering the terrain and the landscape.
He said riding in the bush would give them more exposure as compared to riding in places such as stadia.
The rider said they were ready for the event and appealed the community to come and support them.
Kgosi Setlhodi thanked OMC for holding event in Chanoga again noting that they were looking forward to working with the club to grow the event to become better and bigger.
He said the event was a welcomed development in the right direction as it would make the village known and also promote sport tourism in the district.
Kgosi Setlhodi said the event would benefit the community economically as they would sell their products during the event. Ends
