Independence football mania for Kgatleng residents
26 Sep 2019
Residents of Mochudi and surrounding villages are set to enjoy a football mania galore on Independence Day at Mochudi Rovers grounds courtesy of Kgatleng Independence Legends Cup football tournament.
Speaking in an interview, event organiser, Sugar Molefhe said the tourney was on its second year and the teams to feature were Mogoditshane Fighters, Township Rollers, Extension Gunners and Mankwe Masters from Rustenburg, South Africa.
He noted that this time around, they had decided to make the tournament a charitable event, with the aim of giving back to the less privileged members of society.
“We have decided to help out the visual impaired students at Linchwe Junior Secondary School with various things such as toiletries, sporting equipment, books and stationery,” he said.
“The students are boarders at the school and some of them come from far places, which makes it difficult for parents to buy them necessities,” he said adding that they had pledged to help with proceedings from the football tournament.
He said they also realised that even though some of the students were excellent athletes having won medals at competitions, they did not have the necessary equipment.
“We are not only looking at athletes but also those that perform exceptionally well academically,” he said.
Molefhe called on football lovers and the rest of the community to rally up and support this initiative.
He said it was up to people to uplift each other and make a positive contribution to the community they live in.
“Moroto wa esi ga o ele, mabogo dinku a thebana,” he said, adding that last year’s turnout was good and were expecting more people this year.
He noted that security would be provided at the event and encouraged people to exhibit good behavior and enjoy responsibly.
“Batswana have always been a peaceful nation and I do not see it changing anytime soon and we should always strive to live and relate to each other with dignity, respect and love,” said Molefhe.
Regarding fixtures for the tourney, Molefhe said the first semi-final would be a 9am between Township Rollers and Mogoditshane Fighters.
He further said the second semi-final would then kickoff at 11am, pitting Extension Gunners against Mankwe Masters.
“There will also be a curtain raiser game between Rebels and Motswereng Sporting Club at 1pm, which will then be followed by the losers’ final at 2:30pm and then the final at 3:45pm,” he said.
Tickets are P10 adults, P5 children and P20 for cars. Ends
