24 Sep 2019

Police in Maun are investigating the death of a 36-year-old man suspected to have been trampled to death by an elephant on Sunday at Ditshiping settlement.

There were many elephant prints where the man’s unconscious body was found.

In an interview, District No. 5 Officer Commanding Senior Superintendent Peter Gochela said the man was found with serious injuries by a passerby on Sunday afternoon.

The man, he said, was later taken to Letsholathebe Hospital, where he was certified dead..

In another incident, he said Maun Police were investigating an accident involving a Cessna 414 aircraft, which apparently failed to release its front wheel, whereupon the pilot forced landed at Maun International Airport on Sunday afternoon.

Nonetheless, Senior Supt Gochela said the four occupants, including the pilot, did not sustain injuries.

He said the pilot and one passenger were of Italian origin while two other passengers were South Africans.

The quartet, he said, were given medical attention and released, while the aircraft suffered minor defects.

Furthermore, Senior Supt Gochela said police were searching for three culprits who escaped after they were found skinning a lion near Tubu in the Okavango area.

He said the suspects fled the scene when they saw the police approaching, leaving behind a shot gun.

The police are therefore appealing to members of the public to help the police arrest the suspects. ends
