Nine drown in Boteti River

25 Aug 2013

Nine people drowned in the Boteti River since 2011, says Police Officer Commanding in Letlhakane.

In an interview, Senior Supt Isaiah Makala said six people drowned in 2011, two in 2012 and one in 2013.

Senior Supt described as unfortunate that since the river started flowing many dry years, it now resulted in loss of life when it was supposed to be a blessing for the residents.

He said the drowning occurred despite repeated appeals by dikgosi and the police for people to be careful when they crossed the Boteti River.

He noted that the latest death occurred because the water level went up when the 60-year-old victim, a woman, had crossed to the other side to fetch firewood.

He advised that people should always use the bridge to cross the river.

Senior Supt warned that although the river benefited people as it provided water for their livestock and it was where they fished, they should be mindful that water can be a killer.  ENDS
