The Indian High Commission, on June 2, brought together cyclists in an attempt to create awareness on climate change.
In an interview, Indian High Commissioner, Dr Rajesh Ranjan said his office organised the event to commemorate World Cycling Day as well as create awareness on climate change and World Environment Day billed for mid June. Dr Ranjan said the day sensitised people on the health benefits of riding a bicycle and protecting the environment.
“Riding a bicycle is a healthy way of transportation, with zero gas emission and non-pollution,” stated Dr Ranjan.
Dr Ranjan noted that his office also commemorated the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and therefore merged the two events. He said they were planning to include the two in their calendar of events. For his part, the European Union Ambassador, Jan Sadek said cycling was also a great exercise.
As someone who cycled to work every day, Sadek encouraged riding as an alternative to driving. He said it was easier to cycle than walk, as one could not get sweatier than when cycling.
Sadek encouraged authorities to plan and build roads with bicycle lanes for safety and easy access for cyclists.
Doing so, he said, would encourage more people to ride. ENDS
