Sejelo police in Kanye are investigating a case of motor vehicle thefts which occurred over the weekend.
In an interview, Sejelo Police Station Commander, Superintendent Mogomotsi Matlapeng said the stolen vehicles belonged to Kanye Administrative Authority.
Mr Matlapeng said they received a report from security officers who were guarding the Department of Works and Transport premises where the vehicles were parked.
He said the security officers were allegedly attacked by five unknown men wearing face masks.
The two vehicles are a white Toyota Hilux with an estimated value of P450 000 and a white Isuzu Double Cab valued at P250 000.
He said they have not made any arrests but investigations were ongoing.
In another similar incident, Mr Matlapeng said they were investigating a case of motor vehicle theft involving a blue Toyota Surf valued at P50 000 belonging to a 57-year-old woman of Ledubeng Ward.
The victim is alleged to have parked and locked her car at her residence and only realised that it was missing the following day when she woke up.
“We have observed that the suspects must have pushed the vehicle out of the yard as it did not have any security features besides locking,” he said.
Mr Matlapeng, however, assured residents of Kanye and the surrounding areas of the security and protection of their goods amid the challenges faced.
He said there had been an increase in cases of motor vehicle theft, adding that there were suspicions that there was a market for such vehicles in neighbouring countries.
He said the recent theft brings to eight the total number of vehicles stolen in Kanye since the beginning of the year.
Four of the vehicles belonged to government and the others belonged to individuals.
Mr Matlapeng advised vehicle owners to install security devices such as alarms and steering locks to prevent easy access into their vehicles. ENDS
