Thapa encourages orphans to dream big

13 Aug 2013

Orphaned children have been encouraged not to give up their dreams as their condition was not a curse.

Speaking during a donation of 51 school tracksuits to Makaleng primary school, Pelaelo junior secondary and McConnell College by Ms Sinah Phuthego on August 12, Councillor Damien Thapa of Makaleng said the issue of orphans is not a new phenomenon as it had been there long time ago.

He said it should not come as surprise when people volunteer to give as way of lightening the children’s lives so that they too could feel appreciated despite their family backgrounds.

Cllr Thapa said the donation should be used wisely by the beneficiaries so as to leave lasting memories on their lives and the donor.

He cautioned patrons against going around boasting about what they had done to the beneficiaries.

However, he also cautioned the 51 children that being an orphan should not be used as an excuse for one to be out of control.

“It will be disappointing to hear that one of you has dropped out of school due to social ills, take your education seriously and turn your life around,” cautioned Mr Thapa.

He further said the children and their guardians should also know that such a gesture would not be always available to them and such emphasised responsibility, especially on the part of guardians.

Handing the donation, Ms Phuthego, who is a Makaleng resident, explained that she heeded the call by the government to give to the unfortunate members of the society.

Ms Phuthego stated that it was true that the government alone cannot be able to care for all the people in need of help, hence those with capabilities should come in and augment the efforts.

She said that the tracksuits would assist children avert cold conditions which have been gripping their part of the country for some time.

This, she noted, was what prompted her to do something for children from families that cannot afford to provide their children with tracksuits and jerseys to protect them from the cold weather.

She also said a family member assisted her with P20 000.00 to buy the items for the 51 children.

Apart from the children’s tracksuits, she also donated a wheel chair to the clinic which would be used by patients. Ends
