Maun Senior Secondary School 4x100m inter-boys relay team kept spectators on their toes as they outclassed their competitors to win the race in 41.27 during the 2019 Botswana Integrated Sports Association (BISA) and Botswana Primary Schools Sports Association (BOPSSA) third national athletics competitions held at the Francistown Stadium recently.

The quartet, which represented North zone, was made up of Brian Motsumi, Calvin Bathusi, Rafaere, Morowero and Larona Mayana.

They started the relay on a high note with Motsumi handing the baton to Calvin Bathusi in a favourable position.

Bathusi, who was running the second leg made a huge difference in the event, ensuring that he wasted no time during the baton exchange phase, as he handed to the marauding Morewero, who also maintained the lead and handed to Mayana, who was running the ‘glory leg’.

Mayana anchored his team as he managed to hit the finish line first though under a lot of pressure from his opponents.

Mayana, who finished the relay, said his team mates were determined to redeem their pride given that they did not perform well in their individual races.

He said they both enjoyed the race adding that despite the pressure from their opponents, they managed to hit the finish line with a bang.

“Honestly, we all did our part, I must admit it was not easy, if you look at it, all the teams were gunning for us, we knew it was not going to be easy but after Good Hope dropped the baton, we knew we were running for gold,” he said.

South Central settled for second position with 41.33 while North Central finished third with a time of 42.28.

In the 4x400m junior men relay, Good Hope Senior Secondary School won the race with a new BISA record of 3:12.28.

The team was made up of Morekolodi Sebangani, Omphile Ntaolang, Phodiso Rampa and Bernard Olesitse.

Position two went to South Central with 3:13.24, while North Central settled for third position with 3:19.47.

Olesitse, who was running the anchor leg said in an interview that they were excited that they had managed to overcome what happened during the 4x100m final.

He said the race was tough, but at the end they had to give the spectators a good performance given that all eyes were on them after dropping the baton.

“We were determined and were not that bothered after dropping the baton because we knew we will have the second chance in 4x400m and this time we did everything right,” he said. ENDS
