Cycle4Life races for cancer

Chain Ring in partnership with Cycle4Life Cycling Club, Khumo Properties and Cancer Association of Botswana will on April 14 host a cycling race in Gaborone themed: Race for Cancer.

Cycle4Life club captain, Leutlwetse Kgosidialwa said in an interview that although driven by the joy they got from riding, this time they would be riding for a good cause.

“The race’s overall idea is to raise cancer awareness and raise funds for the Cancer Association Botswana (CAB),” he said, adding that Race for Cancer was a fundraiser for the Ride for Pink project, which also included using cycling as a tool to create awareness around cancer.

Kgosidialwa explained that two years ago through the Ride for Pink project, team Chain Ring had a ride from Maun to Gaborone and also from Kasane to Gaborone.

“This year we will cycle from Maun to Gaborone via some of Boteti villages,” he said.

Sponsored by Airport Junction Mall, the Race for Cancer has three challenges.

The first is the 120km challenge which is for seasoned cyclists, while the 60km race caters for youth, junior, U-23 and the not so seasoned cyclists who are unable ride 120km.

The 30km challenge is for beginners and corporates.

The race starts at 7 am at Airport Junction Mall through BBS Mall to Fairgrounds Mall and over the BURS flyover to Rainbow Circle through to Molapo Crossing and Malotwane in Kgatleng District and back to Airport Junction Mall.

Registration fee is P250, P150 and P100 for 120km, 60km and 30km respectively. However,

Kgosidialwa said corporate registration fee was P1 000 for a team of four riding 30km.

Kgosidialwa noted that they would also be donating items to BCA on the day, saying the organisation had presented them with a wish list, and that the club would pick and buy what they could afford.

“In the past we bought the association a branded car, a trailer and a year’s worth of fuel as the race fundraiser was purely for that,” he said

The race, which has also attracted international cyclists, has prize money for the elite 120km for both males and females of P12 000 and P6 000 and P3 000 respectively for second and third positions.

U-23 male and female 120km winners  will also get P10 000, P5 000 and P3 000 for first, second and third positions respectively.

The 60km race also has prize money of P1 000 first, P750 second and P500 third for both male and female. Kgosidialwa said trophies would be awarded for corporate teams.

He reminded cyclists that the last day for registration was 13 Saturday, and that there would be no registration on race day. ENDS
