President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has promised to serve both the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) and Batswana deligently and unreservedly.
Dr Masisi was speaking at the party's national council earlier today.
He said the act of electing the party president heralded a dawn of a new day as well as acceptance of a new BDP.
"The new BDP holds firm its founding principles of democracy, development, self-reliance, unity and Botho as a basis for inclusive development. These values are the anchors of Botswana Democratic Party from which springs ideas to address the new and current priorities of Batswana," he said.
Specifically, he said the new approaches spoke to the creation of sustainable jobs, good governance and economic growth as well as securing a future for Batswana.
Meanwhile, he thanked all, particularly democrats, for their support ever since he assumed leadership role.
"Your continued commitment and support to this great movement have propelled us to work hard to protect and enrich the very ideals that established our party."
He also congratulated his challenger, Dr Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi, though she pulled out of the presidential race, as well as her supporters for launching a spirited campaign for the presidency of the party and thus urged them to appreciate the democratic processes that had shaped the party for a long time.
Thus, he said it was time for democrats to come together as one, united and focused party and galvanise Batswana as a united people.
Further, he said the council gave them opportunity to take stock of the party as well as government's policies and programmes.
"Furthermore, such introspection also provides an appropriate platform for us to reaffirm our collective commitment to the responsibility of leading our people and improving their lives," he said. ENDS
