Farmers can export live cattle
12 Aug 2013
In view of the impending drought declared by government recently, farmers will now export live cattle effective August 5 to December 31.
A press release from the Minister of Agriculture explains that the dispensation or arrangement is subject to review at the end of the period.
The release further explains that the export of live cattle will be allowed for older cattle of older than 30 months.
It states that farmers wishing to export cattle will have to make their own arrangements subject to meeting the necessary procedures and veterinary requirements for both Botswana and the recipient countries. It further states that the Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) will also continue to purchase all young cattle under 30 months (0-2 tooth) through the normal channels where farmers are informed of the sale points and dates.
It says BMC will continue buying older cattle, above 30 months, through the normal qouta system and will thus purchase on a needs basis. ENDS
